Folks first off I have to warn you that Lake Houston is a mess right not. Due to the heavy rains and storms north of Houston there is all kinds of debris floating into the lake from the San Jacinto River. It is dangerous on the lake as some of this debris is large logs that are barely above the surface and you don't see them until you are right on top of them. So if you do venture out to the lake be very careful.
Bass fishing was bad!! Not only is there all the debris floating around the water in most of the prime bass fishing areas is very muddy. We were able to get a few small bass to hit, but they were few and far between.
We gave up on the bass and decided to see if we could catch a catfish dinner. For the catfish we used CJ Punch Bait that I carry in the boat just for days like Friday. Does CJ Punch Bait work you might ask, and the answer is YES!!! That is why there is always a couple of jars in the boat.
We were using the Minnow and Crawdad flavors and the catfish seemed to be hitting them pretty equally. Now we didn't catch any monsters but we did end up with 7 nice channel cats in the 1-2 pound range that will make for a good dinner or two in the future. We were using a Fish Finder rig (similar to a Carolina Rig) with the special punch bait treble hooks. We drift fished this rig between the FM 1960 bridge and the Power Poles. The wind was out of the NNW and at about 5Mph so it made for good drifting.
So for those slow days bass fishing that you want to get your line tight and also take home some tasty filets; get you some CJ Punch Bait to keep in your boat.
